On June 1, Kpopeurope.eu teamed up with Ai-Like Entertainment for the first K-Pop Dance Festival in Vienna. For this special event the organizers invited a professional Korean b-boy group named I.O.F. (It’s our feeling) Crew, flown in from Incheon, Korea. These boys managed to captivate the audience right from the start of their performance, which earned them loud screams and a never-ending round of applause. After getting such a response from the audience in Vienna, there was no doubt that Kpopeurope.eu had to ask the boys for an exclusive interview. Read about how they experienced the K-Pop Dance Festival in Vienna below.
Kpopeurope.eu: Hello I.O.F. Crew! Thank you for letting us have an interview with you! Could you please introduce yourself shortly to the Kpopeurope.eu readers?
I.O.F. Crew: Hello, everyone! We are a group of b-boys called I.O.F. (It’s our feeling) Crew based in Incheon, South Korea. It’s nice to meet you!
Kpopeurope.eu: Who came up with your unique name and what does it represent exactly?
I.O.F. Crew: Actually, our name used to be a project name, but later on it became our official crew name. It basically means “this is how we feel (It’s our feeling)”.
Kpopeurope.eu: Why did you start a b-boy dance group specifically and not, for example, a hip-hop dance group?
I.O.F. Crew: It just became like this. Every member in our team started dancing as a b-boy in the beginning. But since we aim to cover the full range of arts, we are also learning things other than b-boying.
Kpopeurope.eu: What does a typical day of the I.O.F. Crew look like? How often do you practise?
I.O.F. Crew: We used to practise four to five hours per day but nowadays, because we are doing office work as well, we practice 2-3 hours every day.
Kpopeurope.eu: Did you suffer any hardships and what was the biggest challenge you encountered so far?
I.O.F. Crew: Well, we had financial difficulties when we only performed as professional dancers. But we put our efforts into establishing a company and as a result, we were able to stabilise the team.
Kpopeurope.eu: When we saw I.O.F. Crew at the K-Pop Dance Festival Vienna, we could see that you were a team that was built on hard work. Could you tell us what you are doing to improve your performance even further?
I.O.F. Crew: Each member is challenged to learn about other things such as beatboxing, DJing, percussion and so on. This is because we would like to broaden our spectrum in art and performance. Our advice for other dancing teams is therefore to pursue “something more” than just dance performances.
Kpopeurope.eu: That’s interesting advice! Thank you very much! Speaking of the first K-Pop Dance Festival here in Vienna; four members of your crew came to the event to perform for a European audience. Were you surprised when you heard about it for the first time?
I.O.F. Crew: We learnt about this event through an acquaintance in South Korea. We were very impressed that many people supported us despite our lack of skills in K-Pop dancing.
Kpopeurope.eu: Did you have time to watch any of the performances of our young and aspiring K-Pop dance groups? How did you like them?
I.O.F. Crew: We watched many teams’ performances from backstage and also from the side. We were moved to see how supportive and enthusiastic the teams were towards one another.
Kpopeurope.eu: During your final performance, some of the dancers unexpectedly joined you for PSY’s “Gentleman”. Were you surprised by this and did you have fun together?
I.O.F. Crew: We enjoyed it! For the “Gentleman” stage, we were not that surprised by people unexpectedly joining us, because we experienced a large scale flash mob of around 100 people in South Korea before.
Kpopeurope.eu: Were you surprised that K-Pop, and especially K-Pop cover dances, are so popular in Europe?
I.O.F. Crew: We knew about the fact that K-Pop dancing is very much popular in South-East Asia, but we were very surprised when we saw how popular K-Pop is in Europe and especially in Austria, the country of classical music!
Kpopeurope.eu: While listening to K-Pop was the main, not to say “only”, focus before, more and more fans are inspired to start K-Pop dancing now. As professional dancers, is there anything you want to say to our aspiring dance groups here in Europe? Any special advice?
I.O.F. Crew: Keep enjoying! You guys are already the best!
Kpopeurope.eu: Do you have any plans of coming back to Austria in the future?
I.O.F. Crew: If you invite us again, we will be there!
Kpopeurope.eu: Last but not least, is there anything else you want to say to our readers, K-Pop fans, and K-Pop dance groups here in Europe?
I.O.F. Crew: We really appreciate the invitation to this meaningful event. Hopefully, we will be able to meet again with an even better performance!
Kpopeurope.eu is very grateful that I.O.F. (It’s our feeling) Crew agreed to have this exclusive interview with us. We would therefore like to thank the four members of I.O.F. Crew again, not only for the interview, but also for coming to the first K-Pop Dance Festival in Vienna. We are certain that everyone present enjoyed your performances to the fullest. Thank you very much!
